About the stamp designs: Pictures a one of Bugs Bunny’s iconic personas – a barber. The artwork came directly from Warner Bros. animation artists who also created the sketches on the reverse side of the complete pane of 20 stamps.
First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic with a First Day of Issue postmark from Burbank, California, home of Warner Bros.
About the Bugs Bunny set: Includes 10 different stamp designs issued in honor of Bugs Bunny’s debut on screen in 1940. Each design pictures a different on of Bugs’ famous personas: a barber, basketball player, Hollywood celebrity, court jester, Brünhilde, mermaid, piano player, super-rabbit, baseball player, and soldier. The set also honors Bugs’ place in popular culture and animation history.
History the stamp represents: Some of the most famous Bugs Bunny cartoons are the ones when Bugs participates in a parody of a well-known story. The animated short titled Rabbit of Seville is one example.
The cartoon opens with Elmer Fudd chasing Bugs Bunny toward a crowded amphitheater waiting for a production of The Barber of Seville to begin. (Interestingly, the poster shown in the cartoon features Italianized names of the short’s producer, writer, and director.). Bugs hides backstage and tricks his nemesis into following him before opening the curtain to reveal the audience and orchestra.
As the music plays (an arrangement of Rossini’s overture to The Barber of Seville), Bugs, dressed as a barber, joins Elmer Fudd onstage. As the cartoon plays out, Bugs subjects Elmer to several increasingly over-the-top treatments. He wields a pair of scissors, hedge trimmers, and even snake charms an electric shaver to chase Elmer. By the end of the short, both characters are attacking each other with bigger and bigger weapons. Finally, Bugs gets the upper hand and dumps Elmer into a giant wedding cake.
Bugs’ several disguises throughout the episode make it an especially funny one. In fact, in 1994, animation experts named it number 12 on a list of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of All Time.
