History the stamp represents: Jasper Johns is an American artist known for his work as a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker. He was a major figure in the post-World War II art world and took part in the abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and pop art movements.
In 1954, Johns began creating artwork of flags, maps, targets, letters, and numbers. These have become some of his most famous paintings. He sought to explore familiar symbols like the American flag and their meanings to both himself and others. Perhaps his most well-known painting is the Flag, 1954-55.
Johns’s Flag is an encaustic (special wax used for painting), oil paint, and newsprint collage measuring 42.2 by 60.6 inches. It actually includes three separate canvases mounted together on a piece of plywood. The painting pictures the classic red, white, and blue American flag as it appeared from 1912 to 1959 (48 white stars). It is an interesting art piece in that the viewer sees something different depending on how far away they stand or from what angle they look at it. For example, when you get close, you can see some of the words in the newsprint. Johns deliberately chose everyday articles, avoiding big headlines or new events.
Johns created over 40 American flag paintings, but Flag, 1954-55 had the most impact. As of 2024, it was on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Why is "FOREVER" crossed out in the image?
So the lines in your picture:
- It does not mean that the stamp has expired;
- It does not mean that you cannot continue to use it;
- Nor a postmark;
- It's just an artificial anti-copying line added to the display image.
